UEFA Cup Newcastle - Sporting = Shearer vs Liedson ?
Sporting Lisbon are going to make their third trip to England's north-east this season when they face Newcastle United in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup next Thursday, April 7.
Sporting who knocked Newcastle's local rivals Middlesbrough out of the competition (with two wins 3-2 in England + 1-0 in Lisbon), return to St James' Park for the first leg of their quarter-final.
Apart from the match in December, Newcastle and Sporting have clashed twice before in European Competition and Newcastle beat Sporting 2-1 on aggregate in the second round of the 1968-69 Inter Cities Fairs Cup campaign (1-1 in Lisbon and 1-0 in Newcastle) - which ended with Newcastle winning the trophy - their last major honour.
Sporting had earlier set the tone by includind an English club as victims on the way to their own European sucess. In the qurter-final of the 1963/64 UEFA Cup Winners's Cup, Sporting met Manchester United FC and produced one of the great European combats. After losing the first leg at Old Trafford by 4-1 to a Denis Law hat-trick and a fourth from Boby Charlton, Sporting found a hat-trick hero of their own in Osvaldo Silva in the return leg, as the Lisbon side beat the favourites 5-0 !. Sporting then went on to the final and beat Hungarian side, with a win over MTK Budapest after a replay.
This time the portuguese team must be considered favourite in light of recent results of both teams. Newcastle lost last game at home 0 - 3 while Sporting went to Oporto to beat clearly Boavista by 4 - 0, in spite of Hugo Viana, on loan to Sporting from Newcastle, will not be able to play on Thursday due to the loan agreement.
Newcastle is 11th in the English National League with 30 games : 9 wins 11 draws and 10 losses 41-48 in goals (-7) and Sporting is 4th in Portugal with 27 games played, 14 wins 6 draws and 7 losses 56-30 in goals (+26). Liedson is the top scorer of National League with 21 goals. Bellamy and Shearer 7 goals each are the best scorers for Newcastle side. We will find also the two top scorers in Uefa Competition: Shearer with 10 goals and Liedson 8.

Last news say that Robbie Elliott is set to return after making a quicker than expected return from injury. Meanwhile Newcastle chairman Freddy Shepherd delivered to Lee Bowyer and Kieron Dyer the final of final warnings, in light of their idiotic actions last match against Aston Villa when they were sent off by the referee after fighting each other.
For other side Hugo Viana (as i said above) and Douala, injured, will be absent in Sporting what is an important "handicap" for the portuguese team.
The winner will play with the winner of the duel between VillaReal /Az Alkmaar.
The final takes place on Wednesday, 18 May at Sporting Lisbon's Jose Alvalade Stadium and this is fact one motive more for the ambitions of the Portuguese team.
