International Museum Day, since 1977, has been celebrated around the world because «Museums are an important means of cultural exchange, enrichment of cultures and development of mutual understanding, co-operation and peace among peoples».

Each year, the International Council of Museums (ICOM) selects a theme. The theme for 2008 is «Museums as agents of social change and development»
