International Human Rights Day
10 Dec. - Human Rights Day this year is of special significance as it marks the beginning of the 60th anniversary celebrations of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which represented the first step in establishing a comprehensive international framework for the protection of human rights.
«All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.»
Em português:
«Todos os homens nascem livres e iguais em dignidade e direitos. São dotados de razão e consciência e devem agir em relação uns aos outros com espírito de fraternidade».
This is the first article of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights adopted and proclaimed on 10 Dec. 1948 by the United Nations General Assembly, after three years of preparation. The vote was 48 to 0 with the Soviet bloc, Saudi Arabia and the Union of South Africa abstaining.
