Intersex Awareness Day is the international day of grassroots action to end shame, secrecy and unwanted genital cosmetic surgeries on intersex children.
About one in 2,000 babies are born with genitalia that identify them as intersex. Intersex is the mismatching of genitalia with chromosomes; e.g. an XX individual (chromosomally identified as "female") lacking a uterus, fallopian tubes, etc.
Technically, intersex is defined as "congenital anomaly of the reproductive and sexual system." Intersex people are born with external genitalia, internal reproductive organs, and/or endocrine system that are different from most other people.
