The Hollywood star who became a Princess


Grace Patricia Kelly was born in Philadelphia. Although her family had opposed her becoming an actress, Kelly after attending the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City, became a model and an actress. Her stage debut was in 1949 in the Broadway production of The Father by August Strindberg. Her first motion picture was Fourteen Hours (1951). The following year she starred with Gary Cooper in the western High Noon. The Country Girl (1954) starring with Bing Crosby gave her an Academy Award as best actress. That year she also appeared in Rear Window (with James Stewart) and Dial M for Murder (directed by Hitchkock). In 1956 Kelly starred in her final two films, High Society and The Swan.

She retired from her motion-picture career to marry Prince Rainier III of Monaco in 1956.

She was killed in a car accident near Monaco in 14 th September 1982.Grace and Rainier had three children. Rainier was deeply affected by the death of Princess Grace, and remained unmarried until his death in 2005.
