International Day for the Eradication of Poverty
The World Day to Overcome Extreme Poverty was officially recognised by the United Nations in 1992. [General Assembly resolution 47/196 of 22 December 1992] to be observed on 17 October, beginning in 1993. However, the day was first celebrated in 1987 by thousands of participants at the Human Rights Plaza in Paris, France, in reply to Father Joseph Wresinski’s appeal.
The theme of the United Nations for the International day for poverty eradication 2006 is "Working Together out of Poverty". Among the many ceremonies today around the world, there will be a commemoration ceremony at UN Headquarters in New York.
