- 1846 - Seth Carlo Chandler Jr. was born (d. 31 Dec 1913). American astronomer best known for his discovery (1884-85) of the Chandler Wobble, a complex movement in the Earth's axis of rotation (now refered to as polar motion) that causes latitude to vary with a period of 14 months.
- 1850 - Guerra Junqueiro was born in Freixo de Espada à Cinta (d. 1923). Portuguese journalist, politician, writer and poet. A revolutionary, he wrote violent satiric poems attacking conservatism, romanticism, and the Church. Typical are A morte de Dom Jõao (1874) and A velhice do Padre Eterno (1885).He later turned to writing simple, touching lyrics of rural life, as in Os simples (1892).
