1924 - VIII Olympic Games opened in Paris

Image Hosted by ImageShack.usIn these games John Weissmuller, who would be the famous Tarzan, won 3 medals in one only day (20 June), two of gold in swimming and a bronze in water polo. But the number one of these games was the Finnish runner Paavo Nurmi who won five gold medals to add to the three he had won in 1920. On 10 July he ran 1500 m to win easily and less than 1 hour later he returned to the track to win the 5.000 metres.

3,089 athletes (135 women, 2,954 men) were presented representing 44 Nations; 126 events ocurred and 17 sports: Aquatics, Athletics, Boxing, Cycling, Equestrian, Fencing, Football, Gymnastics, Modern Pentathlon, Polo, Rowing, Rugby, Sailing, Shooting, Tennis, Weightlifting and Wrestling.

United States of America led the medals table with 45 gold (G), 27 silver (S) and 27 bronze (B). The second place was for Finland 14 G -13 S-10 B and the third place was France 11 G - 13 S- 10B.

Portugal won 1 medal of bronze in Equestrian / Jumping (team mixed), the first of his History, in an event won by Sweden and with Switzerland at second place.
