I do not know what I am eternally seeking

I do not know what I am eternally seeking
on earth, in the air, and in the sky;
I do not know what I am seeking; but it is something
that I lost and I know not when,
and that I do not find even when I dream that it invisibly pervades
all that I touch and all that I see.
Happiness, I shall never find you again
on earth, in the air, or in the sky,
even though I know that you exist
and are not an empty dream!
