Quotation of the day (from Red Corner script)

When I was a child, I would come to this park and play.
My grandmother told me why the bamboo is here.
She said, "It is waiting for the wind to touch it. "
"It is filled with emotions. "
"Listen to the sound and you can feel them".

From Red Corner (Justiça Vermelha)

Letters to Juliet: What and if

"What" and "if" two words as nonthreatening as words come. But put them together side-by-side and they have the power to haunt you for the rest of your life: "What if?"...

I don't know how your story ended. But I know that if what you felt then was love - true love - then it's never too late. If it was true then it why wouldn't it be true now? You need only the courage to follow your heart...

I don't know what a love like that feels like... a love to leave loved ones for, a love to cross oceans for... but I'd like to believe if I ever felt it. I'd have the courage to seize it. I hope you had the courage to seize it, Claire. And if you didn't, I hope one day that you will.

Citação do Dia / Quotation of the Day - Janus and The Tourist

Elise: It's the um...the Roman god, Janus. My mother gave it to me when I was little. She wanted to teach me that people have two sides. A good side, a bad side, a past, a future. And that we must embrace both in someone we love. And I tried. (in The tourist a movie with Angeline Jolie and Johnny Depp)

Quotation of the day - Omar Khayyám

Drink wine, this is life eternal. This is all that youth will give you. It is the season for wine, roses and drunken friends. Be happy for this moment. This moment is your life.

(Toward the beginning of the film 'Unfaithful', Paul tells Connie to open a book to page 23 and she reads that passage)

Quotation of the day: It's the memory of another life you could have had

Gavin Banek: It's like you go to the beach. You go down to the water. It's a little cold. You're not sure you want to go in. There's a pretty girl standing next to you. She doesn't want to go in either. She sees you, and you know that if you just asked her her name, you would leave with her. Forget your life, whoever you came with, and leave the beach with her. And after that day, you remember. Not every day, every week... she comes back to you. It's the memory of another life you could have had. Today is that girl (in Changing Lanes)

Invictus: Great film

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll.
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

My blueberry Nights

"Um interessante filme sobre amores, desilusões, perdas e recomeços. Marca a estréia da cantora Norah Jones como atriz e do diretor chinês Kar Wai Wong em Hollywood. Vale a pena pelo cuidado técnico do diretor e por sua forma característica de narrar uma história. Um filme bem cuidado e interessante nos detalhes". (daqui)

The centenary of Elia Kazan's birth

Elia Kazan [Elia Kazanjoglous] was born in Constantinople, Turkey, on September 7, 1909 to Greek parents. His family emigrated to the United States in 1913 and settled in New York City. Kazan became one of the most visible members of the New York elite. His carreer in theatre and as film director was remarkable. He was a cofounder of the influential Actors Studio in New York in 1947. Elia Kazan won three-time Academy Award winner [Two Academy Awards for Best Director, for Gentleman's Agreement (1947) and On the Waterfront (1954) and in 1999 an Academy Honorary Award for the Lifetime Achievement], five-time Tony Award winner, four-time Golden Globes winner and other important prizes.

"Driven by enormous—some have said ruthless—ambition, Kazan is simultaneously celebrated today as one of the great stage directors-turned-filmmakers and ceaselessly rebuked for his troubling voluntary testimony against former colleagues and companions during the notorious witch hunts orchestrated by the House Un-American Activities Committee in 1952".(from here)

I remember very well two of his films: The East of Eden (1955), with the unforgettable James Dean Splendor in Grass (1961); the first one belongs to my list of the 20 Best films of all time. Let's remember a clip:

Elia Kazan died in New York City on September 28, 2003.
