É preciso avisar toda a gente
Dar notícia, informar, prevenir
Que por cada flor estrangulada
Há milhões de sementes a florir.

É preciso avisar toda a gente
segredar a palavra e a senha
Engrossando a verdade corrente
duma força que nada a detenha.

É preciso avisar toda a gente
Que há fogo no meio da floresta
E que os mortos apontam em frente
O caminho da esperança que resta.

É preciso avisar toda a gente

No Dia Mundial do Livro cumpri a minha participação no 4º. BookCrossing Blogueiro

do céu.
A bala no menino, levou-o...
                                          Na queda,
inútil, ficou-se a espada partida.
..............................................

Se os homens  quisessem,
o engenho assassino,
as armas da Morte, talvez se rompessem
sem nada valer.
-Espada de lata do loiro menino -
Se os homens quisessem...
E os homens vão querer?

Novembro de 1938.

International Day for Biological Diversity

Forest Biodiversity

The United Nations proclaimed May 22 The International Day for Biological Diversity (IBD) to increase understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues. When first created by the Second Committee of the UN General Assembly in late 1993, 29 December (the date of entry into force of the Convention of Biological Diversity), was designated The International Day for Biological Diversity. In December 2000, the UN General Assembly adopted 22 May as IBD, to commemorate the adoption of the text of the Convention on 22 May 1992 by the Nairobi Final Act of the Conference for the Adoption of the Agreed Text of the Convention on Biological Diversity. This was partly done because it was difficult for many countries to plan and carry out suitable celebrations for the date of 29 December, given the number of holidays that coincide around that time of year.

The theme for 2011 is Forest Biodiversity.

Help to protect the Nature and the Biological Diversity.

International Literacy Day / Dia Internacional da Alfabetização

International Literacy Day Image from here

Each year, September 8th marks the celebration of literacy and learning internationally. International Literacy Day (ILD)was proclaimed by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) on November 17, 1965 and was first celebrated in 1966.

Literacy is more than reading and writing– it is about how we communicate as a society. It is about social practices and relations, about knowledge, language and culture. (United Nations)

On International Literacy Day each year, UNESCO reminds the international community of the status of literacy and adult learning globally. Celebrations take place around the world.

Some 776 million adults lack minimum literacy skills; one in five adults is still not literate and two-thirds of them are women; 75 million children are out-of-school and many more attend irregularly or drop out.

According to UNESCO’s "Global Monitoring Report on Education for All (2008)", South and West Asia has the lowest regional adult literacy rate (58.6%), followed by sub-Saharan Africa (59.7%), and the Arab States (62.7%). Countries with the lowest literacy rates in the world are Burkina Faso (12.8%), Niger (14.4%) and Mali (19%). The report shows a clear connection between illiteracy and countries in severe poverty, and between illiteracy and prejudice against women.

So, The Power of Women's Literacy is the theme chosen for ILD 2010.

World Humanitarian Day

2010 World Humanitarian Day poster

The General Assembly of the United Nations adopted in its Plenary Session on 11th December 2008, the Swedish sponsored Omnibus Resolution on “Strengthening of the Coordination of Emergency Humanitarian Assistance of the United Nations”, that carried the historic decision by the world body, to designate the 19th August as World Humanitarian Day to honor all humanitarian and the United Nations and associated personnel who have lost their lives in the cause of duty and those who have worked in the promotion of the humanitarian cause. (Read here A-63 L49 Resolution (pdf link).

The designation of 19 August as World Humanitarian Day is the outcome of the relentless efforts of the The Sergio Vieira de Mello Foundation and his family working closely with the Ambassadors of France, Switzerland, Japan and Brazil in both Geneva and New York to table and steer the draft Resolution through the General Assembly.

Sérgio Vieira de Mello dedicated a life time spanning over thirty years in the United Nations, serving in some of the most challenging humanitarian situations in the world to reach the voiceless victims of armed conflict, alleviate their suffering and draw attention to their plight. He was killed together with 21 colleagues on 19 August 2003 in Baghdad.

So, World Humanitarian Day is designated "in order to contribute to increasing public awareness about humanitarian assistance activities worldwide and the importance of international cooperation in this regard, as well as to honour all humanitarian and United Nations and associated personnel who have worked in the promotion of the humanitarian cause and those who have lost their lives in the cause of duty, and invites all Member States and the entities of the United Nations system, within existing resources, as well as other international organizations and non-governmental organizations, to observe it annually in an appropriate manner."

2010 World Day to Combat Desertification

The World Day to Combat Desertification is celebrated every year on 17 June since 1995, the same year the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) was implemented, to mark the date that the Convention was adopted in Paris, France, in 1994. By 2005, 191 governments around the world had signed the UNCCD, which promotes effective action through innovative programmes and supportive international partnerships.

The World Day to Combat Desertification is observed with a view to raise awareness about the Convention, its concerns and activities.

The United Nations designated 2010 the International Year of Biodiversity.

This year’s slogan, “Enhancing soils anywhere enhances life everywhere”, reflects the theme of the 2010 International Year of Biodiversity. The UNCCD aims to sensitize the public to the fact that desertification, land degradation and drought dramatically affect biodiversity resident in the soil.

World Environment Day / Dia Mundial do Ambiente

Many Species. One Planet. One Future

World Environment Day (WED) was established by the UN General Assembly in 1972 to mark the opening of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment.

Commemorated yearly on 5 June, WED is one of the principal vehicles through which the United Nations stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and enhances political attention and action.

The theme for WED 2010 is “Many Species. One Planet. One Future”. It "echoes the call of the International Year of Biodiversity to stop this mass extinction and raise awareness about the vital importance of the millions of species that inhabit our planet’s soils, forests, oceans, coral reefs and mountains. Our health, well-being and sustainable future depend on this intricate, delicate web of ecosystems and life".

World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development

Dia da Diversidade Culturalimagem daqui

World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development is annually held on May 21 to help people learn about the importance of cultural diversity and harmony.

A major challenge of the Twenty-First Century is to make diversity out of difference, that is to say, to promote unity by cultivating – and not by reducing – human complexity.

The General Conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) adopted the Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity in Paris, France, on November 2, 2001. It was the 249th resolution adopted at the 57th session (.pdf link) of the United Nations General Conference. Although the declaration was the culmination of years of work, it was adopted in the wake of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. This reaffirmed the need for intercultural dialogue to prevent segregation and fundamentalism.

by Ms Irina Bokova, Director-General of UNESCO, on the occasion of World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development 21 May 2010.
