Cedo ou tarde, a todo o homem chega a grande renúncia. Para o jovem não existe nada inalcançável. Que algo bom e desejado com toda a força de uma vontade apaixonada seja impossível, não lhe parece crível. Mas, ou por meio da morte ou da doença, da pobreza ou da voz do dever, cada um de nós é forçado a aprender que o mundo não foi feito para nós e que, não importa quão belas as coisas que almejamos, o destino pode, não obstante, proibi-las. É parte da coragem, quando a adversidade vem, suportá-la sem lamentar a derrocada das nossas esperanças, afastando os nossos pensamentos de vãos arrependimentos. Esse grau de submissão (…) não é somente justo e correcto: ele é o portal da sabedoria.
