International Mountain Day 2008

The United Nations General Assembly in its 78th plenary meeting, adopted a resolution to designate 11 December as International Mountain Day, as from 11 December 2003.

International Mountain Day is an opportunity to create awareness about the importance of mountains to life, to highlight the opportunities and constraints in mountain development and to build partnerships that will bring positive change to the world's mountains and highlands.

Each year the International Mountain Day focuses on a specific theme that represents challenges and opportunities to mountain people and environments. This year, the theme for International Mountain Day will focus on Food Security in Mountains.

International Mountain Day 2008, with its theme of Food security in mountains, is an apt occasion to reflect on how hard it is for mountain people to consistently get adequate and nutritious food to lead healthy and active lives.

Never forget that mountains are the source of most of the world's freshwater and harbour some of the world's richest biodiversity.

Hint: If you have some time free take a walk on a moutain near your place of residence and breathe some clean air.
