Throughout Europe, 9 May is recognised as Europe Day, and marks the anniversary of the day in 1950 that the first move was made towards the creation of what is now known as the European Union. French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman gave a speech (Read here Schuman's declaration) calling for European countries to combine their coal and steel production under a single European institution, as "the first concrete foundation of a European federation".
