International Mountain Day 2007

«Facing Change: Climate Change in Mountain Areas»

The United Nations General Assembly in its 78th plenary meeting, adopted a resolution to designate 11 December as International Mountain Day, as from 11 December 2003.

International Mountain Day is an opportunity to create awareness about the importance of mountains to life, to highlight the opportunities and constraints in mountain development and to build partnerships that will bring positive change to the world's mountains and highlands.

Each year the International Mountain Day focuses on a specific theme that represents challenges and opportunities to mountain people and environments. In 2007, the theme for International Mountain Day will focus on climate change, 'Facing Change: Climate Change in Mountain Areas'. The focus of observance of International Mountain Day is at country level, where a wide range of educational, advocacy and media activities take place.

Never forget that mountains are the source of most of the world's freshwater and harbour some of the world's richest biodiversity.
